- HOTEL BETHLEHEM by Tom W. Kelly and Tim
Bryant directed by Brad Cooreman. Tired of Tiny Tim? Wanna crack The
Nutcracker where it counts?! Check into the HOTEL BETHLEHEM! The fiercely
funny, full-length Bible farce, that is! They're baaack! Isis Arts Collective
presents their second annual production of this high-energy romp with a
few new twists! What loathsome lodging would turn away Mary and Joseph
on that not-so-silent night? And given all that "Divine Retribution"
in the Bible, could the inhospitable inn escape unsmited? The manger-full
of mangy mongrels features the irrepressible Twins from Sodom, their lecherous,
treacherous Father, the coin-counting Tax Collector, his behemoth Bodyguard,
the myopic Angel, the immoral Innkeeper and his fanatical Mother-in-law.
Does anyone survive the heavenly wrath, or do they all death-spiral to
their disastrous dooms? Based on actual passages from the Old and New Testaments,
and layered with bawdy plot turns, these tawdry tales create their own
delightfully twisted and perverted Christmas Eve legend.

of it" October 4 - November 10 TheTrain Play or The Reckless Ruthless
Brutal Charge of it, a comic-poetic runaway meditation on time, history,
and apocalyptic anxiety during a one-night train journey to the end of
the world. What does the end of the world look like? A true modern myth,
The Train Play, is a journey from dusk to dawn on a train hurtling towards
infinity. Eight strangers meet on the train including a twelve-year-old

Goddess, an unraveling physicist, an Irishman fleeing predatory angels,
an embittered travel writer and three Russian brothers who seem to have
escaped from a Chekhov play. When the sun comes up, they have arrived at
the end of the world. The story combines the lushness of archetypal myth

- SNAKE IN THE BASEMENT: THE PROSECUTION
OF REV. BILL PRUITT and BRACE YOURSELF by Lunatique Fantastique
Two Plays in Repertory!!!
Please note: Both shows contain mature content
intended for adult audiences
- Critically-acclaimed audience favorites Brace and Snake return to the
stage in a repertory run at Exit on Taylor. Through several outings over
the last two years, both shows have been revised and refined into even
more splendiferous ordinary object transmogrificatory exposition, on the
topics of polio, and pedophilic clergy, respectively.
- Snake in the Basement: the Prosecution of Rev. Bill Pruitt.
Five puppeteers cloaked in black slide and roll pieces of newspaper across
a table. Suddenly snakes are hissing and slithering on the
stage. They merge and transform into a bouncing torso, arms, legs and a
disembodied head. In an instant, these disparate parts coalesce: The puppet
of young
Bill Pruitt future Presbyterian pastor, African missionary, and alleged
pedophile is born. Its time to bring Snake back again, given
whats been happening in the Catholic Church and given my own personal
knowledge of the mismanagement of Pruitts case at the corporate level
of the Presbyterian Church, says Wetzel. Pruitt was an employee
of the Church for 60 years. The first allegations were made in the late
50s while he was still a missionary in
Africa. He stayed in service, and was moved from the Congo to different
pastoral posts in the states for the next 20 years. The last reported molestation
occured in 1979. Theres a lack of understanding about
perpetrators, she continues, why they do it, what effect they
think theyre having on the child. As a character, Bill Pruitt fascinated
me. He was a very popular and charming man with a tragic flaw. I wanted
to see the world through his eyes. I wanted to create a character that
the audience would find delightful and adorable who then becomes a monster
and betrays their trust.
- This year, the church launched a posthumous investigation into the
Pruitt complaints. Women who wish to have their stories considered must
sign a witness protection form agreeing not to discuss their
stories with the
media, nor with other alleged victims. As I perform this piece, I
meet more and more women who were accosted, some of whom choose not to
publicly come forward. Wetzel has chosen not to sign the gag order.
In addition to these performances this fall, Lunatique Fantastique will
be taking Snake to the Mac Theater in Dallas (Pruitts home town),
in Spring 2003. The Exit on Taylor performances of Snake feature live musical
accompaniment on the bassoon, flute, and piano. Music is composed by Loren
Linnard and performed by Linnard and Jack Baxley.
- "This is pure theater: responding to the sparest suggestions,
we create the piece finally in our own imaginations
It's rare enough
to find a company dedicated to serious puppet theater for adults
Don't miss this exceptional, intelligent, singular work." --Brad
Rosenstein in the SF Bay Guardian 9/15/99
- Brace Yourself
- Using only a few pairs of shoes, some wheels, a purse, and her father's
leg brace, Liebe Wetzel and her Lunatique Fantastique puppetry ensemble
create a whimsical story of one man's life with polio.I wrote Brace
Yourself! as a birthday present for my dad, says Wetzel, 40, whose
parents still live in her native Texas. Although, he still wonders
how I can make a living playing with things most people throw away.
Best of Fringe award winner in the 2001 San Francisco Fringe Festival,
Brace is back with even more storytelling surprises and edifying puppet-treatises
on the American polio epidemic.
- Liebe Wetzel conjures magical images of childhood joys and
racking pain with crumpled sheets of paper, a few shoes, pots and other
found objects
Told through found- object puppetry like her luminous
"Snake in the
Basement" it's an affecting meditation on the once-epidemic scourge
of polio as reflected by the life of her father, who was stricken with
the disease as a child. A wheel and a cane become a playground for happy
children's shoes, skillfully manipulated by black-clad puppeteers. Pots
and lids convey the terror of iron lungs. High heels, hats, a coy purse
and a leg brace enjoy a delightful courtship." --Robert Hurwitt

- THE MELTING POT (II) by Carol S. Lashof'
The second selection in Paducah Mining Co.'s Staged Reading Series. Bay
Area Playwright Carol S. Lashof has written such critically acclaimed plays
as "Medusa's Tale", "Nora's Daughter", and "The
Story". Her newest play, THE MELTING POT(II), revisits a great American
myth. The original play, "The Melting Pot", by Israel Zangwill,
is an American Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending; it opened in Washington,
D.C. on October 5, 1908 and was hailed by President Theodore Roosevelt
as "a great play." "THE MELTING POT (II) frees Zangwill's
characters from the confines of the well-made play while still presenting
the love story of two immigrants, David, a Russian Jewish "pogrom
orphan," and Vera, the daughter of a Russian baron. It takes scenes
from the 1908 Melting Pot and inter-cuts them with a polyphony of other
voices: Israel Zangwill himself, leaders of the movement to restrict immigration,
an eyewitness account of a massacre of Jews in Russia, and similar accounts
of a massacre of Blacks in Oklahoma. Ultimately, this panorama of experience
invites the audience to shift their own perspectives. Directed by Susannah
Martin. Tickets: A suggested donation of $5-10. Resaervations: 415/561-1418

- Isis Arts Collective's SUMMER SHORTS:
DAYS AND NIGHTS five world premieres by Bay Area playwrights and three
rare comic gems from Christopher Durang and Wendy Wasserstein, directed
by Mike Ward with Dan Adamson, Bret Anderson, Celeste Coit, Micaelee Ellswythe,
Alexandra Kaprielian, Leo Lawhorn, Elisa Pluhar, Breanne Russell and June
Stoddart. Christopher Durang's works have always taken a whacky and bitingly-satirical
look at society and its accepted sociopathic authority figures. In WOMEN
IN A PLAYGROUND, Durang pits two decidedly different mothers with polar-opposite
outlooks on life and child rearing. Continuing with his two-woman theme,
PHYLLIS & XENOBIA takes a slice of not-so-humble pie from the kitchen
of two sisters who are just not right. Finally, Durang and Wendy Wasserstein
join forces for MEDEA, a madcap send-up of classic theatre. The five world
premieres journey in style from dark comedy to romance, from realism to
surrealism, and destinations in between. SUFFICIENT CONCLUSIONS by Tim
A. Taylor takes a surreal, cycle-of-life look at the wisdom, hope, and
learning that both drive and transcend our patterned lives. In Mike Ward's
SANDS THROUGH THE HOURGLASS, three sisters warm in the sun while sifting
through the sands of an abusive past. And in the bittersweet memory play,
THE TWO MRS. M'S by Daniel Vojir, two elderly women bond over beer, family
and the tarot. The Swag: Limbo by Russ Duffy asks, "What if there
were a purgatory?". Two men, once lovers, re-meet after 25 years in
the romantic FADED PHOTOGRAPHS by Tom W. Kelly. MEDIA. EXIT

- AUGUSTINE (Big Hysteria) by Anna Furse.
Augustine, housemaid and hysteric, is celebrated by famed
neurologist Professor Jean-Martin Charcot for her dramatic display of "Grand
Hysterie" in his Paris
lunatic asylum, the "Museum of Suffering." Like the Elephant
Man, she is the center of the voyeuristic
attention of "civilized society" from 1875-1880. Hers is a perverse
and erotic entertainment as she "stars"
in Charcot's public lectures. But Charcot's upstart young student, Sigmund
Freud is developing a few
theories of his own on Hysteria. Can Freud unlock the secrets behind Augustine's
mysterious, terrifying and
increasingly violent ailment, or will she be lost in the struggle between
Charcot's insistence on the
"performance" of Hysteria and Freud's theories of the "unconscious?"
Interweaving live music, cinematic
projections and poetic text, the play is magical, startling and vivid.
The Shee Theatre Company proudly
presents the United States Premiere of Anna Furse's play, directed by Virginia
Reed and featuring Michael
Keys Hall*, Laura Hope Owen, Paul Silverman*, and Alice Wiley-Pickett.
This is an Equity approved
project; * indicates member of Actor's Equity. REVIEW. FRI-SAT JUL 12-AUG

- THE KITCHEN by Arnold Wesker. The
first selection in Paducah Mining Co.'s 2002-2003 Staged Reading Series.
Published in 1956, THE KITCHEN takes a behind-the-scenes look at a large
restaurant kitchen as thirty chefs, waitresses, and kitchen porters, prepare
for the daily meal service. The action builds to a climatic lunch-hour
frenzy that will make your head spin as Wesker's kitchen becomes a microcosm
of the petty power struggles, class warfare, and dramatic intrigue that
affect any hierarchy. Paducah Mining Co. hopes to adapt THE KITCHEN as
a play set in an American kitchen with a bilingual (Spanish/English) staff.

- 611 SUPREME by E. Hunter Spreen. What
do you really believe in? What are you willing to risk for what you believe
in? What does it take to get you off your ass and in the street? As our
country continues to grapple with the appropriateness of dissent, Paducah
Mining Co. dares to dig deep and get down and dirty with the issues at
hand. E. Hunter Spreen's "611 $upreme" is an "environmental
morality play" that delves into the worlds of capitalism and environmental
radicalism - foes in the age of "progress." In the play, Ehrlend
Swift, a wealthy developer, is targeted by a radical environmental group.
When Ehlrend is kidnapped, both his family and the activists who oppose
him are forced to ask themselves fundamental questions about their existence
and their role as human beings. Paducah Mining Co., producers of such critically

- BODIES AND HEARTS IN THE FACE OF THE MONSTER
by Toni Press-Coffman, about the complexity of the human heart. Inspired
by the frightening conjoining of puritanism and voyeurism that is rampant
in the contemporary United States, the play's main characters are brother
and sister Raymond and Lillian Sparks. He is a poet by vocation, a construction
worker by profession; his sister is the mayor of a mid-sized Midwestern
city. Ray is deeply involved - perhaps in love? -- with two people at the
same time, while Lily is having an affair with a man 30 years younger than
she. The play follows their journeys toward their hearts while examining
along the way the various forms love and sex take -- between friends, between
lovers, between people who are in a relationship for which there is no
clear label. First Seen Productions. EXIT on Taylor -

- FROTH, by Aren Haun. A relentless romantic
comedy by a local Bay Area playwright about the daily highs and lows of
working in a coffee shop. Froth follows the story of Eric, who attempts
to juggle romance, customers, his mother, and his boss, all at the same
time. He becomes so blinded by obsession that he cannot recognize the real
thing, until it's too late. Or is it? Fast-paced and funny, the cafe setting

THE LAST OF THE RED-HOT DADAS Written
by Kerry Reid and Performed by Christina Augello
Follow the outrageous exploits of the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven,
Dada's unsung heroine, as she reflects on the nature of art, gender relationships
and the price to be paid for telling the truth about both. Pre-Punk by 60
years and perhaps our first feminist performance artist the Baroness, sewed
tea balls to her skirts, and wore postage stamps in place of rouge-- and,
once she was through mocking Duchamp, came west to haunt the streets of
Greenwich Village.

she is the only one
living anywhere who dresses Dada, loves Dada, lives Dada."- Little

DIALOGUE BETWEEN A PROSTITUTE AND HER CLIENT by Dacia Maraini. It should be a simple exchange: money
for sex. In this exchange, it's not so clear who's taking whom for what
or for how much. Virginity, rape, mother's milk, homoerotic fantasies, violence,
literature, politics, money. It sure gets complicated sometimes, doesn't

SONGS ABOUT LIFE & DEATH & LOVE &
INSECTS Written and Performed by Amy X Neuburg
"Neuburg's vocals are a miracle; she is, by turns, a frigid dispenser
of cold truths, a siren and an eccentric." -- San Jose Metro
One-woman techno-circus Amy X loops and layers a harmonious melee of musical
styles into a vibrantly theatrical transformation of the musical revue.
( Second weekend W/special guest, dancer/choreographer Nina Haft performs
"The Ring", bullfigting at it's best!) "Neuburg

are matched by few... Laurie Anderson would be proud." -- Musician

- CONFESSIONS OF A DOPE DEALER by Sheldon
Norberg directed by Bill Allard. In adapting his acclaimed memoir ("Parents
and teens should read this book together." - SF Chronicle)
Norberg provides not just an incredible theatrical experience, but an enlightening
Q&A with someone who knows the boundaries of consciousness alteration.
Damn Good Theater! About.com check it out at www.adopedealer.com Tickets
at ticketweb Dealing's not for everyone, and it exacts a heavy toll, but
Norberg hilariously rakes through the coals of his former career; from
a boyhood as best and brightest, opening the door to knowledge not held
in the encyclopedia, through the tunnel of drugs to acid-tripping blown-away
detritus, always searching for the ember of illumination (upon which he
occasionally burns himself). His drug use may not have been average, but
his examination of the factors leading to drug exploration and the mistakes
that drive it into abuse are well charted, open for all to see, and hopefully
avoid themselves. Anyone with a drug experience will give a nod of recognition
as Norberg invites the world to laugh at the mistakes that almost cost
him his life.Thur/Fri/Sat April 18 - May 11, 2002 EXIT
