My wife and I went to see the show on the 16th and it was once of the best standup comedy shows we’ve seen at the Fringe so far. We can tell both Cathy and her mom have worked a lot for this show as Cathy mentioned her mom didn’t speak English. I’m so looking forward to her other standup shows! All the audience members were laughing unstoppably so it’s really weird to see anyone who left a negative comment – we need to have more sense of humor!

I have seen just over half of the Fringe shows so far and this was the one show that I went for a second viewing. I enjoy international/intercultural presentations and was curious to see how the second show would be different from the first, in particular how Cathy’s mom would respond to different questions. Cathy’s mom is funny in her own way; the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Next time, bring on Dad too!
The biggest difference between the two shows was actually the audience. Somehow, the second group was looser. Cathy’s tango teacher was sitting near me and his constant laughter was contagious.
Contrary to Cathy’s self-deprecating herself as a retarded, fat, unmarried loser, she is actually sharp and radiant with surely many green cards to choose from. I hope to see her do improv comedy sometime.

This show, billed as improv, felt far off from the show’s description. It was basically stand up comedy with a lot of hackneyed jokes (“my mom wants me to get married,””my mom thinks I’m fat”, “my mom wants me to have a child”) that get retread multiple times during the show. Also, it was also creepy AF that the performer googled the audience members who bought tickets online in advance and then called out certain people based on that.

I saw the show with my daughter who’s a teenager. I was so touched by the stories Cathy Zhao told on the stage with her mom jumping in all the time. It’s not just a standup comedy but a family reunion and loving share. Highly recommend!

PS in critique of the critic (Ethan), the show description says nothing about improv and Cathy’s joke about Googling the audience member who works for immigration was… a joke!

Cathy was so funny and her mom was even more! A lot of family trauma in this comedy show! I’d recommend everyone to see it!

I met Cathy Zhao at her standup comedy show months ago and I’m so glad I saw her again! Her mom and her did a great job in expressing their anger in a hilarious way towards each other. I’d love to see her again at bigger venues!

It’s a great idea to get the mom to perform! I was hoping for a heartfelt and funny dialog between the two generations that dives deep into the source of tiger-parenting. But the show didn’t do that. A lot of the jokes were cheap ethnic stereotypes. It’s okay to tell such jokes as long as they get good laughs (but the crowd reaction was tepid at best). Also, the mom’s role was very one-dimensional, as she just hurled unoriginal insults at the daughter throughout. There was no attempt at either reconciling the mother-daughter relationship, or explaining the cause of the mom’s abusive behavior.

A family comedy ensues when two generations are brought together to tell tales of family history. I liked the way that the mother daughter relationship dynamic was presented and how they were able to sort things out in retrospect
